I recently joined the Edge Magazine team as head wardrobe stylist! In the past month since coming on board, I've styled the likes of Teyana Taylor, Khleo Thomas, Andrea Lewis and Serge Ibaka, just to name a few. To say that I've been busy with them, along with all my other obligations, is an understatement! But it's been well worth all my hard work, as I've made some key connects, had the opportunity to work with some amazing entertainers, formed a bond with the incredible staff and now boast a jam-packed portfolio of work I'm very proud of!

Introducing 'Milk + Honey (the series)'

I'm so very excited for the release of the new teaser trailer for 'Milk + Honey (the series).' The show is a new all media (television/web/film) project produced, written and directed by Brown Paper Dolls Productions (Jeanette McDuffie, Dana Gills and Asha Kamali May) with Idris Elba serving as Executive Producer.

The series, which is headlined by Lance Gross, Debbie Allen, Faune Chambers, Bryce Wilson, and introduces Asha Kamali. Also newcomers Yaani King, Shauntay Hinton, Charles Divins, and Rob Smith. The show centers on 4 black women living in Los Angeles, who are on “spiritual, professional and romantic journeys to make their dreams reality."

The ladies of Brown Paper Dolls have been working on the project for “over 3 years,” and describe it as “a mix between HBO’s Entourage and Sex and the City.”

I actually worked on this pilot as assistant wardrobe stylist along side Monique Scott. I have to say of all the projects I've been priviledged to be a part of it was the most fun-filled 4 days of my life! I'm so in love with the cast, crew and everyone who stopped by to show their support for the series. I can't for what's to come!

Way back in August of last year I was privileged enough to do wardrobe for MURS' latest music video "I Used to Love H.E.R. (Again)" along with image consultant Keisa Sullivan. After months of waiting, the video was finally edited and finished late last month. I had a blast doing this shoot! It's crazy to have been such a big fan MURS' music for so many years and to finally have the opportunity to work with him! Truly a solid dude. I look forward to next time working with him and the rest of the crew.

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of working with and styling actress/personality Asha Kamali! She hosted the red carpet on behalf of SoulTrain.com and the American Heart Association, interviewing all your favorite celebrity guests, for the 2010 Soul Train Awards and backstage at the American Heart Association's Red Lounge. She looked AMAZING in the creme, one-sholder Deniesh cocktail dress I pulled for her!

The show filmed in Atlanta Wednesday, November 10th, and the aired on BET and CENTRIC Monday, November 29th.

I LOVE Asha! Had a great time working with her and very much look forward to the next time!

Yet again, I was sleeping. This time, on Compton, CA-native Kendrick Lamar. I heard all the buzz from all my producers friends like Curtiss King and Tae Beast, but for some reason did not take the time to download and listen. Tssk tssk. This self-proclaimed EP became a constant in my car, home and at the gym in November. I still can't get over how amazing the intro is. He spits with SO much passion that he chokes towards the end. Excellence is an understatement for this mixtape.

Kanye West is a genius.

You've probably already seen this and if you're like me you've watched it over and over, at complete and utter awe. I've had countless conversations with friends over the past week discussing all the intricacies of this work of art.

In true Michael Jackson "Thriller" form, Ye has totally redefined the concept of music video for this generation. And like Mike I believe he's reaching a level of pop star that we have not seen since the late great King. We have so many celebrities these days who we praise in the arts that act, sing, rap and...in some cases do nothing at all (i.e. the endless list of sex tape toting socialites). However, I'd argue that we won't be talking about more than half of them in the next 20 years --- thoughts of the past. Sans Kanye. I'm willing to wager he's slowly muscling his way into the history books.

I can't remember the last time I anticipated an artists work in so much! I literally cannot wait to see what Kanye has up his sleeves, whether it has to do with music, fashion or cinema. I was so inspired when I watched this movie, I've had an unrelenting wave of natural energy that has gone through my body since. I think it proves now more than ever is the time for those of us who have that child-like sense of creativity, full of imagination and untapped wonder, to relish in our ideas and share them with the world without fear of being judged.

While obsessively watching Run's House in college, I definitely expected young Diggy Simmons to make a name for himself in the fashion industry, but if you'd told me he'd be a dope hip hop artist too, I would have laughed in your face. Well, five years later Digg is definitely the one having the last laugh. To my surprise, after a few years and puberty Simmons has recently released one of my favorite mixtapes of 2010 --- working with the likes of Lupe Fiasco and Pharrell Williams.

The dictionary defines the word potential in the following manner:

1. possible, as opposed to actual.
2. capable of being or becoming.

Whenever I take someone thrifting this word gets thrown around a lot. I always stress to people the importance of studying any piece that sparks your interest and being able to see the potential in it. Many have endless possibilities and you have to consider that instead of its obviously applications. Just because an article of clothing has been placed in categories like --- activewear, formal wear, etc --- does NOT mean that it has be worn that way. It's completely up to you.

That's exactly what my cousin James, who's an up-and-coming film director in Atlanta, has learned. About a year ago he came home and asked me to help him find something for Morehouses 2009 Homecoming. Amongst everything we found at different thrift stores, the most amazing piece was a charcoal blazer with big, Tom Ford-esque lapels and black piping. He was hesitant, but because he trusts me and my taste he purchased the jacket. Fast-forward to recent times, James decided to dawn this timeless piece for an exclusive Def Jam event he was invited too.

The coat was tailored and the look was styled by designer Karolyne Ashley (pictured below). I love the finished product. Potential...realized!

This past weekend I had the pleasure of meeting, talking with and getting inked by artist Thom Gastelum! It was an awesome experience! Right off the bat, he got and appreciated my vision and was passionate about working on my new piece. While Band of Horses filled the room with ill tunes, Chuva, he and I discussed everything from childhood to our white girl crushes. Ha! Saturday was awesome. At the beginning of summer I told you guys how I'd planned my wardrobe for the season around being the "Fresh Prince of Bayside," borrowing elements from early 90s television icons Carlton Banks and Zack Morris. Well, to say that I've been slacking in my posts this summer would be an understatement, but not without just cause. I've been working hard and I will have lots to show for it this Fall. But even though I haven't been writing as often I have been pretty damn successful with implementing my 90s style inspiration.

A couple of weeks ago, my friend Monique took me to a couple of thrift stores out near her new apartment in Studio City. This was no normal trip to your neighborhood Goodwill or Salvation Army. No! These places were special. The first of which is a thrift that sells gently or never before worn wardrobe from television and movie productions. Talk about GREAT inventory! They had nothing but quality clothing, shoes and accessories! Amongst everything I picked up that day, my favorite item was a pair of Nike Air Flights (pictured above) from the set of Hannah Montana. For some reason that I dared not question, all the inventory from that show was half off that day. So these brand new sneakers, originally priced at $50, ended only being $25! Score one more for The Thrifter!

The older I get, the more evident it's become that God will indeed have his way in your life. Curtiss King and I, or Dwan as I know him, have been friends since 7th grade. Really, more than friends, he's like my brother and like brothers we often bickered and fought. As a result, we haven't talked for the past 2 years...until recently. Just like a scene out of a movie, we worked out our issues and now we're back to being brothers.

Like me, since we last spoke his career has taken off and he's slowly but surely climbing that proverbial stairwell of success. Coincidentally, our reunion has taken place on the eve of his newest release Jet Pack On E. Because I've literally watched the evolution of Dwan's novel interest in music to his transformation into a true artist, I can honestly say that this is his best work to date!

I've been listening to Jet Pack On E for the past week --- at the gym, in my car, at home while I work. He gives nothing but gems on this project with superior production, beats and the dopest rhymes I've ever heard him spit! Every time I listen I discover a new element I didn't pick up before. Something that makes me think, something infection on my creative progress. Music is supposed to move you. This album will move you!

My Sartorial Roots :: Cousin Rick

I usually spend a great portion of my day looking for inspiration. It comes in many different forms. Most times people that give me that inspiration rarely ever realize it. So imagine my surprise when my 17 year old cousin Ricky (pictured above) told me that's what I was for him. He and I had a chance to catch up on things during my nephew's first birthday party a few weeks back when he revealed that he was considering studying fashion design after graduating from high school next year! I can't say that I didn't see it coming though. Rick is not your average 17 year old and he's never been an average kid. This is the same guy who put me up on the likes of J Dilla, A Tribe Called Quest and MURS while he was still a preteen. Besides his impeccable taste in music, he's never really followed trends and dressed like kids his age either.

My advice to my cousin was simply this --- BE FEARLESS! One of the things I always look back on (but don't regret) is the fact that I didn't take my passion for fashion seriously until after I had graduated from Morehouse. I wish I could have approached it with the same gusto and forethought that he is now. He is going to make an amazing designer and force to be reckoned with. I've watched him grow and evolved over the years. I can't wait to see what God has in store for him next!

Dress Code :: The Summer Wedding

Hard to believe but before I looked up I suddenly reached the age where my friends are running off, falling in love, getting married and having children. No, seriously, where does the time go? I haven't been to a wedding in years and honestly haven't been to many in my life. So when 3 of my friends announced that they were getting married and ironically on the same day, I knew I was going to have to dig deep for a little creativity.

I decided to go to my friend Amanda's wedding because we are the closest of the 3 while I did manage to make a cameo at Ashley's reception, but Mel's was completely out of the question as it was in Jamaica. Amanda had a garden wedding in beautiful Manhattan Beach, CA, blocks away from the beach. So I elected to wear: $100 light grey suit (3 Day Suit Broker), $2 yellow Geoffrey Beene shirt (thrift), $1 black knit tie (thrift), $25 Kenneth Cole tie bar (Bloomingdale's), and $80 Kenneth Cole shoes (K&G). The combination of colors and textures (pictured above) was perfect for the location.

To quote GQ Style, "What you wear to a wedding doesn't just depend on the season. You also need to consider the location—and the crowd. Like, are we talking an East Coast prepster fest on a Nantucket beach? Or a Wayfarer-addled hipster bash in a SoHo loft? [You should look sharp] wherever you end up on the summer wedding circuit."

"They like me! They really like me!" Hahaha! That sound bite keeps playing over and over in my mind when I think about all the recognition I've been getting for what I do. I was recently interviewed by The Examiner by Budget Fashion columnist Chrystal King.

The article discusses what else but my passion for thrift shopping! I really enjoyed this interview because she dove a little deeper and posed questions people had never thought to ask like, When did you start thrifting? and What are your favorite retail stores? All and all it was a great exchange and I was happy I got another opportunity to get my name out there and spread my message of smart shopping!

HABIT x CLOSE TO ALMOST

One night I went to the Dakota Lounge for a Yoo-N-LA event and had the chance to see indie artist Habit perform. I have to admit that one of those people who when told to "put my hands up" by someone I don't know will give the coldest blank stare. Although didn't initially follow directions, I was definitely doing so after the first song! Habit's music and stage presence was a breathe of fresh air - very clever and energetic! The young spitter says of himself, "Born and raised in LA...moved to AZ for college...I rap about everything that happened before that, and all the greatness to come."

Flash x Flair.

You all remember the scene in Office Space where Peter asks Joanna, "Doesn't it bother you that you have to get up in the morning and you have to put on a bunch of pieces of flair?" While it was hilarious, I'd say to Peter HELL NO! Flair has been one of my favorite accessories this season. Since we are experiencing such a bipolar summer, I picked up a few lightweight jackets during my last trip to the thrift --- like the $2 fatigue you see above. They're perfect to have around for the many chilly days we've been having here in Los Angeles.

To add some much needed character to the jacket, I gathered all the various "flair" I had laying around and tagged them on in no particular order. Its an excellent compliment to all my understated summer attire. I've gotten a ton of compliments on it and it's a definite conversation piece. People love to ask questions about all the the different add-ons.

Gather all your buttons, pins and broaches you have and do the same to breathe new life into an old piece!

I'm anything but a typical guy. But like most men, I'm often stopped in my tracks by a beautiful women with big breast and/or an ample behind. However, unlike most guys is the effect a women with impeccable style has on me. I'm often asked by my female readers to either do more posts on womenswear or do a feature on what I like to see women in.

I found this photo on Scott Schuman's blog and got completely lost in it. THIS is the epitome of what I like...no, scratch that, I LOVE this look. It incorporates everything I'm attracted to in a girl - creativity, elegance, class, boldness. The use of color along with the timelessness of it... Perfection...

So reminiscent of our glory days when we'd work all day and party all night with the Dim Mak crew. Only to wake up and do it all over again the next day. For $8 "Mega Bang" provided an open bar, good fashion, multiple rooms, and performances by Lil B' (The Pack), Samo Sound Boy, Lol Boys, Glass Actor & DJ Glover.

Amongst all the free alcohol, partying and good fashion flowing through the building, I also was blessed enough to meet KESH (pictured above)! In case you don't know her, Kesshia "Kesh" Kumari is an English fashion designer, magazine editor, stylist and DJ. I grew up in LA, so seeing celebrities is nothing new to me and I'm rarely ever phased by it. BUT I always uncontrollably act like a groupie when it comes to people I love and respect. I've been following her career for a couple of years and was SO excited to see meet her in person. She's extremely sweet and gracious! She truly made my night.

If Skeet's party, an open bar and meeting Kesh wasn't enough, we ended out night with "breakfast" at Fred 62. That's what I call a little slice of heaven...

Summer Essentials :: Ripped Jeans

Whether you're a man or woman, one of the easiest summer essentials to get is a pair of ripped jeans. I purchased a pair of light-washed Wrangler jeans from the thrift store a couple of weeks ago for $2. Using some tools around the house, I distressed them myself (not an easy process) and now have a pair that look just like any expensive ripped jeans you'd find at retail. They're a great compliment to most other summer essentials, whether your dressed down for the beach or dressed up for a night on the town!

Improv :: The Polo

You ever see something online or in stores and instantly begin salivating? That's exactly what happen while reading an article on Kempt titled, "You're Only as Young as You Feel." In the post they highlight Band of Outsiders' new collection of perfectly designed polos --- particularly one that they joking liken to an Osh Kosh shirt. Even though it was meant to be funny, that's exactly what appealed to me about it. The "This is Not a Polo" shirts maintain the classic cut, while giving you that retro childrenswear feel. So very brilliant.

Although I LOVE Band of Outsiders, I cannot afford that $175 price tag for one shirt. Luckily, I have the knowledge and where-with-all to "improv" with looks that I really like. I was fortunate enough to stumble across this polo shirt at Goodwill for a measly $5! Even more surprising than the fact that I was able to find a similar patch-colored polo, was the fact that it was a Cintas shirt! For some reason they had a bulk of brand new Cintas uniform shirts that hadn't been used. I didn't question it. I just swiped my card and left happy.

Always remember to improvise when you cannot afford the look you want. There is always a cheaper alternative.

Interview with Our Weekly

Somehow I TOTALLY forgot to mention that I was interviewed months back by Our Weekly LA! What is wrong with me?

The interview discusses the current state of fashion amongst African American males and how things have evolved over the past few years, my perspective on it and how I applied that during my days as an elementary and middle school teacher.

To elaborate on what I told OW, during my days as an instructor the reason for the way I carried myself and dressed so well everyday was for three reasons: First, it's just in me and I would have done it no matter where I worked. Second, was to command the respect of my students. I'm very young and at the time was even younger and my students picked up on it immediately. Everyone, even children's, perception of people is largely formed by personal style. I wanted to be taken serious as an authority figure, so I dressed like one. While simultaneously conveying that I was in fact young and wasn't too far out of touch with my students. Lastly, the majority of the kids I taught were from the inner city. The only examples most of them had of a Black man was the thugs and gangsters in their neighborhoods. My goal was to show them that they have options and there are more promising alternatives for their lives. A goal I believe I accomplished. By the end of the school year they were mimicking me before I'd realized it. Their speech patterns changed, their pants somehow found their way to the waist and they couldn't stop talking about attending Morehouse College...and USC. Haha!

I'm taking on yet another alias this summer. You can call me, "The Fresh Prince of Bayside." As I mentioned a few posts ago, my summer style is being completely influenced by the early 90s. It might be a result of my complete and utter obsession with Nick at Nite for the past few months. Reruns of Family Matters and California Dreams have me in a trance, salivating over pieces in the wardrobe.

Since I tend be a little more "Preppy" in my personal style, I wanted to pull in elements of Zack Morris' closet and combine it with the Carlton Banks-esque articles of clothing I have in mine.

THIS is one of my first photographed attempts at meshing the 2 styles. I'm wearing a Ralph Lauren oxford ($5, thrift), black Levi's ($35, Macy's), grey wool limited edition Sperry Top-Siders ($85, Zappos.com), and an amazing, vintage graphic cardigan I found at Goodwill for $2.

Thoughts? Opinions? All are welcome. I'm loving how this whole thing is coming together. It's forcing me to stretch the limits of my creativity.

To further compliment the pairing, I purchased these retro looking pair of Air Flights from a Nike Outlet in somewhere in Florida after my trips to Miami for $40. They are some of the most comfortable shoes I've owned in my life. Every time I put them on, someone thinks I fished them out of some sneaker-head auction or something. LOVE them!

Journey Home

About a month ago I went "home" to Atlanta for the graduations of my cousin James, long time friend Patrick, and honorary little brother Marcus from my alma mater Morehouse College. I hadn't been in 2 years. ATL is always such a breathe of fresh air for me. I was born and raised in LA, but it wasn't until I made my matriculation through Morehouse that I became a man. In retrospect, its so crazy how much I matured, experienced and learned in what seemed like a flash of 4 short years.

While sitting in the Alumni section upfront during the graduation ceremony, I was almost moved to tears looking around at all my peers who have accomplished so much since walking through those gates and thinking about what it means to be amongst the ranks of such men. The term "Morehouse Man" implies to so many different things and comes with so much responsibility --- all of which I welcome and do my best to live out each and every day of my life.

After the ceremony ended I marched out with my fellow alums, leading the brigade of new graduates. During the precession I stared at all the different halls in which I walked, took in the Georgia air that I breathed and smirked at the new generation of Men of Morehouse in all their stylish, rightfully arrogant glory --- my chest swelled with pride and my heart full of joy.

I have returned home with a renewed sense of purpose. For I know that I am predisposed to greatness.

While walking around campus I so much praise on my blog. I had no idea that so many people were turned in, even though we don't speak on a regular basis. What a humbling feeling. In addition, there were several compliments on one my favorite accessories I acquired for the season --- the ever so regal straw Italian boater hat you see in the photo above.

The “Boater Hat” was created in the 1880’s and was brought to America by Italian immigrants and was so called, because it was originally worn by the Gondoliers, usually with a long, doppio nastro. The “nastro” was an easily worn hat ribbon usually in navy and red. Its popularity soared with the American public in the late 19th and early 20th century. The boater hat was a favorite choice of summer headwear and was often seen sported by the middle class for weekend outings, picnics, and more formal events.

Through the years, the Boater hat enjoyed such popularity that it became known as “The Hat of the People”. Not only was it a favorite for entertainers in Vaudeville and light musicals but it was also thought to have been worn by some FBI agents as a sort of unofficial designation in pre-war times.

Neckwear :: The Cravat

How many of you can honestly say that you know what a cravat is? Wikipedia describes the cravat as:

"a neckband, the forerunner of the modern tailored necktie and bow tie, originating from 17th century Croatia. From the end of the 16th century, the term band applied to any long-strip neckcloth that was not a ruff. The ruff, a starched, pleated white linen strip, started its fashion career earlier in the 16th century as a neckcloth (readily changeable, to minimize the soiling of a doublet), as a bib, or as a napkin. A band could be either a plain, attached shirt collar or a detachable "falling band" that draped over the doublet collar. It is possible that cravats were initially worn to hide shirts which were not immaculately clean."

I love that all my fashion forward friends know how much I love a creative challenge. The inspiration for this post came after receiving the following tweet from friend and designer Jenny P who is notorious for keeping me on my toes.

As soon as I can my hands on a decent cravat I'm going to do a follow up post with the results of my styling options for the classic neck piece. Thanks, Jen! ;)

Ironically, the same day I received the challenge from Jen, I later watched an episode of The Game where Hosea Chanchez's character Malik Wright was so brilliantly styled in a paisley print cravat, tuxedo jacket with big lapels and plum colored dress shirt. This definitely got my wheels turning on possible alternatives... And low key, I have worn something like a chavat, but unfortunately have no photos of myself from that night. Oh well! It just gives me excuse to get dressed up again.

I am lucky enough to have gotten my hands on an advance copy of Drake's first official record Thank Me Later a little over a week ago. I've finally decided once and for all, after more than a year, that I'm a fan of his music after listening. I mean, wow! JANELLE MONAE x THE ARCHANDROID

It might sound silly, but although I don't know Janelle Monae personally, I feel like I have a special connection with her. She started off a local artist in Atlanta doing shows in the AUC (Morehouse, Spelman and Clark-Atlanta University) when I was in undergrad and various other venues and I've had the pleasure of watching her evolve as what I'm confident will be described one day as a legendary artist over the past 7 years. Her newest record The ArchAndroid is a classic! She gives you so much musical range with so many different genres, solid lyrics and powerful vocals. I am truly blown away every single time I listen to it.

Board to Death!

Even though the June gloom insists on looming in my SoCal airspace, I think it's pretty safe to say that summer's officially here! For probably the first time in my adult life, I am genuinely excited about the season and everything it has to offer - from the countless barbeques sure to ensue to all the trips to beach I'll be taking. Because I've previously been so stuck on cold weather seasons (especially for the sake of layering), I never took the time to appreciate how awesome summer really is.

Lately, my style's been extremely influenced by the 90s and I've been searching the thrift for pieces to fulfill all my wardrobe's needs in order to respond to my new inspiration accordingly. Again, retail is just not doing it for me. I can't seem to stop yawning as stores are starting to put last season's clothing on the clearance racks and the summer inventory out on display. Everything has me bored to death, and ironically the board shorts are one of the worst offenders. There's nothing stylish about an over-sized short with too much stitching and awful graphics. Gentlemen, it's time for a change... An upgrade, if you will.

I found the shorts in the photos above at a few different thrift stores for all under $5 each (and of course I cleaned them thoroughly). I love them because of the colors, designs and lengths. They feel more adult, have much more character than the board shorts they're currently selling at retail and they are more closely aligned with my style.

My favorite are the vintage, acid wash Nike shorts you see in the first photo above (pictured in front of Versace's house). I styled them with a green striped tank I got from Old Navy for $5 during a recent trip to Miami. I love the contrast of the textures and colors!

I absolutely love what Rogues Gallery is doing this season with their collection of swim trunks! They use bold colors, great length (right above the knee), and smart tailoring. This is the prime example of what I'm endorsing this summer. Click here to see more from Rogues Gallery.

Encounter :: Jeremy Scott

During a trip to one of my long lost favorite thrift stores (St. Vincent de Paul) in the Pasadena area, I ran into genius fashion designer Jeremy Scott! I couldn't have been more excited! I was in the women's section helping my best friend find a couple of items for summer and he was sifting through the rack right across from me. I had to do a double take. Long story short, I introduced myself and asked for a photo. He was extremely gracious. I talked with him briefly about his most recent collection and others thing he has in the works. Great guy! It was such a pleasure.

Style Investment :: Gym Membership

The battle with my weight is one that I've been fighting almost my entire life! The summer before kindergarten my metabolism decided it was going to slow down and so the war began. Though I was always overweight and awkward, I was always accepted by the in crowd so other then simply thinking I wanted to be thinner, I never seriously did anything about it. My parents kept me in sports year-round, but my appetite countered anything I was doing on the field.

During my senior year at Morehouse College my weight had reached its height, tipping the scales at almost 300 lbs. After moving back to LA after graduation, I got addicted to NBC's The Biggest Loser and decided I was finally going to do something about my weight. All the superficial reasons I'd previously had for wanting to lose the weight shifted into a more serious concern for my health. Everything I did left me winded; from climbing a single flight of stairs to tying my own shoes. Besides my health, fashion being my first love, I wanted (and still do) my clothes to fit better and to be able to shop at any store I wanted.

I started my journey by purchasing The Biggest Loser: The Weight Loss Program to Transform Your Body, Health, and Life. This book is outstanding! It gave me all the knowledge I needed about how to actually lose weight in a way that I'd never before been taught. Each and every one of my assumptions was incorrect.

I went on to lose around 80 lbs over a span of 7 months - weighing in at 206 lbs. The lowest in my adult life. I felt great! The compliments wouldn't stop, my shopping options opened up and I felt like I was finally in control of this "hunger monster" that had been dominating my life for so many years.

Unfortunately, my determination was fueled by depression and after I got over what I was going through, I gained 50 lbs back...fast! It took a long time, but today I've refocused and got back in the gym and am constantly fighting my eating habits. I've lost almost 20 lbs, with a new motivation and purpose.

I still have a ways to go. The battle continues...

Even if you happen to be your ideal size, that doesn't make you healthy. Being in great shape has nothing to do with what you look like and everything to do with what you do with your body. I encourage all of you to go out and get a membership at your local gym doing any form of exercise you like. I can't express what a difference it's made in my life since I started going 3 years ago. Although I'm not where I want to be, I know every time I step foot in 24 Hour Fitness I'm adding days to my life!

I read a great article in the February 2010 issue of GQ Magazine that talks about how to successfully and slowly shift your eating habits, making the right decisions with a busy lifestyle and seeing results down the line. Here are 10 easy steps to remember and follow:

1. Eat early.
2. Eat (small portions) often.
3. Reduce portions.
4. Monitor your hunger.
5. Drink water all day.
6. Set small, specific goals.
7. Choose the healthier options at restaurants.
8. Choose one fat per meal, not several.
9. Fuel up (eat) before exercising.
10. Drink less, drink light (alcohol).

Saddle Up!

Being a fashion forward thinker often times presents a problem. I usually figure out my look at least a season ahead and there's guaranteed to be a problem with one of the staples that I've selected. Well my hunt for the timeless saddle shoe is certainly no exception. In fact, it's the prime example of what I'm talking about. I've been looking for a saddle shoe for nearly 2 years now. I looked just about anywhere you can think of. Thrift stores (of course), flea markets, uniform stores, the internet - the list goes on for days.

Because this classic shoe has become more popular over the past couple of years, my luck has improved and I've found several options in the last 6 months. Now the proud owner of not one, but 2 pair, I have to say that this American classic is one of my favorite pieces.

Initially, I purchased this beautiful white & black Burlington from Bass Shoes ($89). Apparently it slipped my mind that I tend to wear a smaller size in dressier shoes because these were much too large for my feet. I filled out the packing slip for an exchange. That is, until I found these...

In my many travels to different thrift stores around LA, I found these 2 amazing pair of saddle shoes. During a trip to Jet Rag, with my friend celebrity wardrobe stylist Monique Scott, I found these taupe and navy saddle shoes by Cole Haan for $35 (left). I stumbled across these black & brown saddle shoes by St. John's Bay for $20, brand new, in possibly thee most random shoe/clothing store in Sante Alley.

Needless to say the Bass saddle shoes went from being exchanges to returns.

Successful Thrifting

Because of the numerous requests and inquiries I've received in regards to successful thrighting, I decided to edit, update and re-post this article I wrote 2 years ago titled, "Do Your Wardrobe a Favor." For all you who are either beginners or have never been thrifting yourself, this how-to-guide will provide you with all the information you'll need to anticipate when walking into a thrift store and being able to navigate through one comfortably (and cleanly).

I have no problem or shame in humbly saying I'm a pretty dapper young man. Wait, can you be humble and make such a statement? Hmmm...who knows? Anyway, I'm often complimented on what I'm wearing and the way I put it all together. It's just a beautiful mess in my mind. What most people don't know upon meeting me, however, is even though my wardrobe is currently ridiculous, I don't spend a lot of money on clothes. Since the time I was a little boy, my mother always taught me to be a smart shopper. I never was the type of person to run to the most popular store in the mall to grab anything you could find 100 other people wearing at any given time. Even when my style was more "urban" I would frequent Marshall's, Ross and TJ Maxx.

Sometime in high school when my style started to evolve and I was enlightened by a great friend about the whole vintage movement and thrift shopping. At first, it was a little off-putting, as it may be to many of you. Whenever I passed a Goodwill or Salvation Army, I had this stigma that those types of places were for poor and homeless people. Needless to say I was dead wrong. It was/is actually a hidden treasure.

I love the current state of fashion in all its schizophrenic glory because I feel like almost anything goes. Just as long as you give an ensemble some thought and be somewhat forward thinking, you can pretty much do what you want. Thrifting is so very conducive to this.

In order to be a successful thrifter, it takes patience. You must have patience. The thrift is nothing like shopping in the mall or at a department store. They are rarely neatly organized and sales reps are not going to help you find item A in a size B. What you see is what's available. They're often a mess. And the closest thing you can come to any organization is the categories - shirts, vests, jackets, pants, suits, etc. That's about it.

Upon entering you should definitely anticipate the smell. Although it isn't unbearable, it is very "pungent and [may] sting the nostrils" as Ron Burgundy would say. Haha! Once you find your desired section, you're going to have to sift through just about everything. I usually try and focus my sights on colors, patterns and textures, and go from there. If it looks like something worth purchasing, I first check the size. If the size is sufficient, I check the quality of the piece looking everything from stains to missing buttons. If everything checks out, I add it to my basket.

I visit some of my favorite thrift stores on a weekly basis and always leave with at least 5 pieces and never spend more than $20.

Everything is second hand, but if you can look past that and you have a good eye, the thrift can be extremely rewarding - as evident by my closet.

Below are all the "ingredients" for any good thrifter.

First and foremost, since I do thrift so often I keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in my car. Thrifting may be extremely rewarding, but the harsh reality is that you don't know where that shit has been.

These are pretty self-explanatory. Again, you don't know where the stuff you purchase in a thrift store has been so wash the hell out of it. I sometimes wash my finds twice to be on the safe side.

Finally, find a good dry cleaner. A lot of the items you buy in the thrift can be machine washed, but some of them can't (or shouldn't be). In the past few months, I've come up on some pretty awesome leather jackets, blazers and other coats that I had to take in. And even though my cleaner is ridiculously expensive, it's worth every penny.

Roll 'Em Up Right

One of the things I hate to see the most when I'm out is a man with his sleeves rolled up incorrectly. Sleeves that are not properly rolled up look sloppy, are comfortable and constantly slip down your forearm. Below is a simple, easy to follow guide on how to do so. Please take note gentlemen.
Now that spring is here, sleeves will be rolled, ties will be loosened, and buttons will be undone. If you’re looking for something more interesting than the usual sleeve roll, here’s a tip on how to stay cool -- pun intended, of course.

1. Fold your sleeve in half, bringing the cuff up to your bicep.
2. Take the lower portion and fold it in half again, creating a roll
below the cuff.
3. Smooth it out and make it neat -- the bottom of the roll should rest
above your elbow. Leave some of the cuff visible.

Meeting of the Minds :: LA's Finest

Like something out of comic book pages, 7 of the most influential African American fashionistos in Los Angeles met up this week to discuss everything from style to education and ultimately possibly combining our powers (in true Captain Planet form). I'm guessing if you don't know me, then you most definitely know one of the other six. I can't express how much I enjoyed being in the company of like-minded individuals, who are just as creative, knowledgeable and ambitious as I am. We all knew at least 2 people in the group and it felt like the collective was bound to happen sooner or later. I'm very anxious to see what comes of association.

We shall see. Stay tuned, true believers...

SB Custom Bag :: Happy Birthday Pants!

My "Super" friend Aminah, who's a grad student at the University of California at Berkeley, came down to LA this past week to celebrate her birthday with us. Amongst my numerous responsibilities as a host, I figured a quick trip to the thrift was only appropriate on our long list of things to do. And as always the thrift yielded some great finds!

Aminah and I both came across this awesome vintage, pale-blue hat box from the 1950s that even still included the original price tag. I figured what better birthday gift than to give her something custom-made, from the heart.

The photos you see throughout this post are of the piece before and after I put my spin on it. I was happy that she loved the finished product; which I completed like 5 minutes before I dropped her off at the airport. These things are not easy! Haha!

I still have a few more pieces I'm working on for people that'll be up in the coming weeks! I'll keep you guys posted.

LAFW :: Destination 1610

LA Fashion Week is officially a wrap! The last event I attended was an event hosted by Destination 1610. The show included “The Viewing” (a runway presentation by Religious Adoption), “The Installment” (a collection by Jerell Scott), and “A Glimpse” (which consisted of metal couture pieces by LaureLuxe), eye wear by SB Shades, jewelry by Micha Design, and swimwear by Cherry Pie. My Sartorial Roots :: The Report Card

The other day during a visit home I went through the mountains of old photos and documents from my childhood that my mother keeps buried deep in her closet. The funny thing is I was looking for a specific photo to add to the Sartorial Roots series and ended up finding something even better! As mentioned before, I love the in depth exploration into what makes me, me.

While rummaging through countless old photos, certificates, awards, and tests, I came across this report card from kindergarten. Of course my grades were on point, so that's not what gripped me. It was my teacher's comments that jumped off the page. In case you can't read it (below), it says, "His writing is dropping, because he has developed his own style." I mean, wow! That just about sums up who I am. It's not that I didn't know how to write properly because I did, and very well and neatly for a 1st grader I might add. The problem is once I got the gist of how to write I began to form the letters the way I wanted. Even now I can still remember hating the way to properly write cursive Fs, Ts and Ws. So...I made up my own.

It's this spirit to do things my way, I feel that make me...Seth.

Style Investment :: Clippers & Trimmers

I'd assume that I don't have to pull out my soapbox and tell you how important it is to get your hair cut and keep yourself well groomed regularly. I have a set appointment with my barber with my barber Aharon (pictured above) every 2 weeks like clockwork. What I like most about the services AB provides, besides the fact that fact that he's an excellent barber, is the fact that he will come to you. I don't have to worry about the hassle of going to a barbershop and waiting for 10 of minutes or hours at a time. He's flexible and I get my hair cut when I want, the way I want, for a very reasonable price. His base starts at $10 and any additional costs depend on how far he has to travel to get to you.

Between those times when I have an appointment with AB (or your own personal barber) is where the investment comes in. No matter how great your barber is, hair grows back relatively fast and no one can afford to run back to their barber every time a new whisker pops back up. So, every man should invest in a quality pair of clippers and trimmers. Even though you may not be a professional, pretty much anyone is capable of holding these tools steady enough to keep everything tamed before your next appointment. Making these purchases ensure that you won't look like Wolfman the next time you sit down in your barber's chair. I personally think Andis is a great brand to go with. I got my Andis trimmers for around $50 and the clippers for $30, and I've owned them for going on 4 years now. I take great care of them; making sure to take all the hair off with a toothbrush when I'm done, oiling them every couple of months and realigning them when necessary. I don't see myself needing to buy another set anytime soon. I use mine every few days to edge my hairline & beard and keep it all trim.

I purchased it the first week it came out on DVD and have been watching it habitually, at least once a month, since. Beyond all the great fashion and glamorous nature of it all, it serves as constant motivator to continue to pursue my dreams in this industry and always be true who I am. This... 'stuff'? Oh... ok. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don't know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean. You're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar De La Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of 8 different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic casual corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. Bullets & Bows Spring 2010 Shoot

But seriously, I hear you loud and clear, and although women's fashion is not my specialty, I still have a great appreciation and passion for it and I promise I'm following designers and trends much more intently to meet your needs and develop my talents. Anyway, this is especially for all of you!

I was recently invited by designer Danni Rouge to shoot the Summer Lookbook for her accessories collection Bullets&Bows. The line boasts custom jewelry pieces that "bridge the gap between streetwear and high fashion" mixing various metals with patterned fabric bows - pretty interestly sick contrast!

As evident by the photos below the shoot went really well. The models Rouge selected brought a strong, positive energy to set; ready to work...and they did!

LAFW :: Concept at Spring Arts Tower

Concept, a new group of L.A. runway shows, was hosted at the Spring Arts Tower in Downtown Los Angeles. Sponsored by Smashbox Studios and Toni&Guy, the shows are meant to capitalize on both L.A. Fashion Week and the local market week (when retailers from all over come to L.A. to check out the new collections from brands). Their strategy is ingenious because L.A. Fashion Week hasn’t historically targeted buyers–the people who actually put collections into all your major retailers.

The roster of brands showing at the 3 day event is pretty eclectic; a mix of familiar and new names: martinMARTIN, Skingraft, Elmer Ave, The Battalion, Valerj Pobega, Mike Vensel (co-organizer for the event with downtown advocate Brady Westwater), Chelsea Rebelle, Farm Tactics, Otto Gates, Jen Awad and John Sakalis. I caught the show Monday night in time for collections by designers B. Scott and Fremont (pictured below). I was very fortunate cause I happened to catch shows that both featured menswear! Extremely dope collections by parties!

I also had an opportunity to meet and network with Fashion Specialist and designer Emore'J Couture (pictured above). Great guy. Awesome personality.

In between each show they had an assortment of installations for guests to observe and an amazing band called Jeffertities Nile (sp?) that I can't seem to find any information on...

Gentlemen, I strongly urge you to go out and purchase the latest issue of GQ Magazine (April 2010). This is probably my favorite issue in years cause it has everything to do with thrifty shopping - namely the article titled "The Penny-Pincher's Guide to Better Style."

This feature includes 25 tips with everything from the best low-cost, high style stores (via Street Etiquette's Joshua Kissi and Travis Gumbs) to salvaging your relatives' timeless pieces and even a do-it-yourself section on how to make your own shorts for this coming Spring/Summer.

Since this past Fall I've anxiously awaited Project ETHOS this Spring! Friend and designer Jenny P, once again hooked me up for the show at The Music Box in Hollywood , this past Friday, March 19th. Project ETHOS, known as the “incubator for emerging artists in fashion, music and art,” is a quarterly, red carpet event in Los Angeles that showcases all emerging Millennial Generation forms of creativity in one house, on one night. By merging fashion, music and art into one giant display of genius, Project ETHOS creates an innovative form of exposure for artists, a new scouting location for talent representatives, and a fresh outing for event goers. Project ETHOS is on a mission to bridge the gap between the Indie and Mainstream worlds and provide opportunity for previously unrecognized talent. With a potent ear to the street, the ETHOS team seeks out extraordinarily talented fresh faces, creating a link to decision makers and industry professionals. Project ETHOS is the next generation of exposing all artistry to the media, public and industry.

I enjoyed this show as much as I did last season! It was so well coordinated and even bigger with even more attendees boasting a packed house! The show featured 10 fashion lines, 80 models, live music performances by Bruno Mars ("Nothing on You") & Love Grenades, DJ Sets from Mando Fresko of Power 106, 12 visual artists, and 5 fashion vendors. I was most delighted with the fact that this season's show featured a menswear line ironically called Seth Wellington, III! Awesome collection of minimalistic basics, well tailored and designed.

DIY :: The SB Briefcase

Before the messenger bag, there was the briefcase. Think back to a time when men wore those wool double-breasted suits and carried those boxey leather briefcases with all those "important" documents in them. No matter what the contents, it gave the impression that guy meant business. As much as I love my collection of messenger bags, there's something so distinguished about a briefcase. Somewhere along the way we traded one in for the other and forgot about that distinction.

Last week while sifting through the mountain of bags in one of my favorite thrifts I came across this old camel colored briefcase and fell in love. Although I didn't have a specific plan for it, I saw so much potential in it. I thought I'd spend the $5 and figure it out later...and I did!

Thursday night I had an epiphany about how to give this bag "new life." Friday morning I woke up with purpose! After a good workout at the gym, I hit the streets of downtown's Fashion District. I think I may have walked every inch of the 2 mile radius in search of the perfect pieces, visiting every fabric, trim and button store I could find with the bag in hand. After purchasing a bunch of different stuff I went home and got to work. My aim was to create something that gave the briefcase some "color," while maintaining its distinguished quality and making it me.

What you see above and throughout this post is the finished product! This is my custom SB briefcase, with my embroidered initials, the white teddy bear and subtle black button on the back. It took a couple of hours and it is so well worth it. I showed it to a couple of friends this weekend and everyone seemed to love it! Chuva did ask me last night what the significance of the bear was as everything I do is intentional. I feel like a teddy bear is very symbolic. As children they represented a "security blanket" that comforted and gave us the confidence to sleep throughout the night. Fashion is that thing for me today. Whoever said clothes don't make the man was a damn lie! While I don't agree that clothes make you who you are, they definitely present the best you to the rest of the world and tell a story of who you are. This teddy bear, my sense of style, is one of my many sources of my confidence.

Pre-LAFW :: Chris Jovan & Myra Wallace Show

Last Thursday I had the pleasure of attending another pre LA Fashion Week event at the grand opening of Studio 900 in Downtown Los Angeles. It is a boutique showroom/studio facility providing a multi-functional production and exhibition space for art, photography, film, video shoots and green screen. The show was put on by brilliant "endustry" greats stylist Chris Jovan and fashion show coordinator Myra Wallace.

Because of some electrical issues, the show didn't start until almost midnight, but Jovan made sure to keep the social atmosphere lively while everyone waited. I had plenty of time to network and hang out with friends & fellow fashionheads - Jenny P, Megan, Keisa, Asia, Trend, Mr. Bradshaw and Keisha Nicole.

Chris styled the show by pulling pieces from different designers. He did an awesome job! The runway show even had a guest appearance from America's Next Top Model alum Jade Cole. All and all, great night! Free drinks and hors d'œuvres, great conversation, and even better fashion!

Weekend Finds 3.14.10

This past week is no more special than any other. You know I hit a few thrift stores and as always, I came up some great stuff! I had lunch with a friend in Lakewood, CA yesterday and afterward decided to Google a few of the closest thrift stores as I'm not in that area very often. I hit the freakin' jackpot! This place was like secondhand heaven! It is one of the largest, cleanest, most organized spots I've come across in a while. So much so that all the clothing is even color-coded. Seriously, where they do that at?

After gainging my composure and catching my breathe from the anxiety attack I had initially walking in, I spent the next 2 hours exploring the racks and racks of inventory. Now, this place is a little more expensive than I'm used to, but the extra dollar or 2 is definitely worth it given the selection and organization. My Sartorial Roots :: "Play" Clothes

People are always asking me, "Where'd you get IT from?" While I'm sure my oh-so-stylish mother would love to take credit and I'd agree, I'd also argue that IT just didn't come from one place. Hence the My Sartorial Roots series.

Going through some old family photos I ran across these of my younger brother Josh and I playing in my father's clothes. This was probably one of my favorite pass times as a kid. I loved going in my dad's closet that smelled like leather and mahogany, yanking his blazers off the wooden hangers, grabbing a pair of shoes and walking around the house like a "grown up."

I love this series cause it's almost like conducting a genealogical study to find out who/why I am me, I guess. While they were just jackets to me at the time, I didn't realize I was taking note of my father's style and graphing elements into my own personal tastes. My dad probably doesn't consider himself a stylish person, but in retrospect he always kept a classic collection of blazers and dress shoes. It's no wonder why tweed is my all-time favorite menswear fabric. It started early and my affinity for it developed over the years, resurfacing from time to time. Evidence of which can be seen in the background design of my site's layout. Haha!

Style Investment :: Iron

The term "investment" invokes so many different thoughts. I'm willing to bet fashion is the last thing on your mind when you hear it, right? Well gentlemen (and ladies too), when it comes to personal style, you should really think about investing...in a quality iron, that is. Many underestimate the power of a great clothing iron coupled with your wardrobe. I can't explain how frustrating it is to be at a friend's house when you're planning to get dressed or you're out of town at a hotel, and all they have available is one of those cheap ass $10 Sunbeam irons. What am I supposed to do with that when I packed heavy cotton and denim?! It's simply not acceptable and certainly not sufficient enough for a man's wardrobe.

I'm clearly all about finding just about everything for the low, but there are certain things I just won't skip on when it comes to price and quality; hygiene being number 1 and a quality iron somewhere on my top 10 list. There's nothing like having nicely pressed clothing. It makes your clothes look more expensive and compliments the contours of your body.

I purchased my Black & Decker iron you see pictured above on sale, of course, for $80 at Sears (originally retailed for $119.99). Paying that premium also guarantees long-life. I've had it for 3 years and it still works like new. I could iron the wrinkles out of John McCain's face with this thing! Just a tip, the minute your iron starts to leak and spew out that rust water, it's time to toss it and buy a new one.

Pilot Season :: The SB Experience

I'd like to formally introduce you all to one of the many side projects I've been working on. Welcome to 'The SB Experience!' Amongst the collection of many hats that I wear, I'm firmly planting both my feet and stepping into the shoes of Seth Brundle the personal stylist. I'm currently developing a consulting service where I help men advance their style based on any budget. It's pretty evident that I'm an advocate for men's fashion and getting guys to care about their appearance again. The SB Experience takes men on a journey that goes far beyond clothing. It's a session of self-discovery where we will explore how you want the world to perceive you and how to go about doing that - encompassing everything from etiquette and resume building to date ideas and interior design. It truly is a total reinvention of self - an unrivaled experience.

Since I am in the development stages of The SB Experience I figured who better to experiment on than my own friends. This past weekend we celebrated Glenn's (a.k.a. Gsmoove) 25th Birthday and everyone needed something "new" to wear. Since we are a "League of Extraordinary Entrepreneurs" we definitely wanted to stand out amongst the other guys attending the celebration.

I took my boys on a fantastic voyage that started with one of my favorite Goodwill stores in Los Angeles. I could tell that they were initially a little apprehensive about sifting through secondhand clothing. Before the shopping begun, I had to reassure them with my Guide to Cleanly Thrift Store Shopping. I then began my Terminator-esque tracking for potential pieces, pulling articles of clothing off the racks like a madman while occasionally mumbling, "try this on." I took an arm full of clothing I'd pulled, took them to the mirrors and started piecing them together. It wasn't until that moment that I made believers out of them. That is when they discovered the joys of thrift store shopping. I loved the looks on their faces when they decided on what pieces to purchase and saw the total cost. Several blazers, shirts and ties all for under $20! The journey continued at a few other Goodwill and thrift stores and ended at the Beverly Center where we all purchased a few basic pieces - all on sale of course!

Here is the final product! Each of my friends and I were very well dressed for under $30! It definitely went noticed by the 400+ guests who attended Gsmoove's party. We visibly stood out amongst the ranks of typically dressed men.

Res Infinitus, Los Angeles

I love visiting Chuva at the Res Infinitus LA office! Everytime I go I get the most powerful volt of creative energy! Slacking is not allowed with her. When you come in, her expectation is that you have your laptop and/or other work materials in-hand, ready for some productivity. The room is always filled with the sounds of something dope I've never heard before. I can't recall one single time I've dropped by and not asked, "Who is this?" while bobbing my head uncontrollably.

This time around we discussed some new projects they have in progress like Res Ride. This is an after school class where they teach inner city kids in middle and high school to design and built their own skateboards. The course encourages students to express themselves through art in a very creative way that's extremely relevant to their interests. It's a brilliant way to reach children in the community and get them involved in safe activities.

We also discussed a few of my projects I have in the works. You know though - Mr. Ever-Elusive. To be revealed soon...

Pre-LAFW :: Lynn Dee

Getting a headstart before all the rest, friend and designer Rhonda Persons (above) gave us an amazing LA Fashion Week kickoff with her collection Lynn Dee, showing at Falcon in Hollywood last Monday! I've seen Rhonda's collection before, but what made this occasion so special is that she debuted her menswear line alongside her chic line of women's clothing! She made me pinky swear that I'd come cause she wanted to get my honest opinion on her work. My thoughts? She did a great job! Lynn Dee's menswear extension is definitely new and refreshing. Style Wars :: The Office, Part IV

How ironic that during this edition of the Style Wars :: The Office series I was just laid off from my 9-to-5. Haha! No worries! That was truly the job from hell I've been more than ready to move on to bigger, and definitely, much better things and God delivered! I just think of this as a push in the right direction and more time to work on what I love - ALL things men's life&style™!

Last week some friends and I decided to attend an exclusive networking event in Hollywood. Net Party is described as the nation's best-attended event for young professionals at "the first of its kind: a world class nightclub combined with the exclusivity of a house party." The event gave us an opportunity to network and speak with people that we probably otherwise wouldn't have. The expectation is to spark conversations up with total strangers based on common career fields indicated on your name tag. It was something very new to me. Contrary to popular belief, I'm painfully shy, but pushed through the nerves and networked my ass off! But you know me. Besides all the elbow-rubbing I was more concerned with what people were wearing. I have to say that I was particularly impressed with my friends and I. We definitely stood out amongst the crowd of terribly dressed men draped in your standard department store business attire. Joining me for this addition are my friends Mr. Dick Wolf and Cecil...

My cousin James "Hollywood" Stephens, who's a senior film major at my alma mater Morehouse College, just finished his first short film titled Russian Roulette! I'm overwhelmed with the feeling of pride I have in him right now! He totally threw himself into this project. I usually talk to him every few days, to discuss anything from what he should wear to the club that night to professors I had when I was in school there. But I've heard absolutely nothing from him for the last couple of months. He suddenly reemerged last week with the amazing finished product you see above!

My favorite men's style magazine, GQ, just published an article of their picks for the top 20 Black Style Pioneers. They included one of my all-time favorite signers, Marvin Gaye, so I'm all for it!

Last night after work I got caught up with my old buddy, Elyse, over crab salad and Crystal Geyser. It's been quite a while since we've seen one another. Life and everything in between has kept us apart, but we finally said enough is enough. It truly was one of the most therapeutic, hilarious heart-to-hearts I've had in a while.

One of the things that she said that stood out the most is the quote you see above. Fashion is indeed my girlfriend right now. I have the most extreme case of tunnel vision and couldn't be hungrier to make my dreams come true and attain all my goals...

I can't wait till we get married. Courting her has been rewarding enough. It's only going to get better from here!

Androgynous Fashionistas

In the spirit of all things men's life&style, I want to highlight a few female fashionistas I really admire. These women took the traditional rules of style and slammed dunked them in the garbage! For them, being ladies has nothing to do with frilly dressed, bedazzled jewelry and 4-inch heels...and in some cases their sexuality. Not at all. They all take different elements of menswear, make them their own and somehow manage to maintain their undeniable sense of femininity.

Sham Shirley is the other half of the LateBoots team along side Marquis Phifer, as well as member of The Brooklyn Circus creative team. Her cheek bones, affinity for varsity jackets, perfect denim, attention to detail and natural makeup make her one of my absolute favorites of the androgynous movement.

Does anyone really need an introduction to comedienne/daytime talk show host Ellen Degeneres? She's been a household name for the past 20 years for her talent, infectious personality and advocacy for the gay community. She's one of my personal favorites because her ability to pull off those perfectly tailored suits. She has the BEST taste when it comes to pulling the most classic elements of men's dress clothing.

I've seen Italian designer Alessandra Colombo's picture many times on renowned photographer Scott Schuman's site, The Sartorialist, and have followed her style ever since.

Malibu's Most Wanted

If you asked me to describe my perfect Sunday afternoon it'd go a little something like this...

I slept in for the first time in weeks! I woke up, made a light breakfast of grilled cheese & sliced fruit and caught up on Grey's Anatomy via Hulu. Sometime around noon I got a text from designer Kianna Shann asking me to come to the photoshoot for her swimwear line Candy Coated. I know what you're thinking. What a delicious invite, right? I got dressed and headed down the 10-W towards Malibu. The ultimate moment of Zen for me was driving down a 5 mile stretch of Pacific Coast Highway, with the wind in my face, taking in the California sun and amazing view of the ocean. When I arrived at the location I was happy that I had neglected to put on socks and wore my light wax-cotton parka. The tides were high which guaranteed wet feet and its still Winter so it was a bit chilly despite the sun.

The gorgeous models that Shann decided to use were as diverse in ethnicity as they were in body type. Incorporating the same quality and style in her pieces as any other couture label, the designer wants her ad campaign to convey that she creates for every woman - color, shape and height. The one thing they all had in common, however, was their beauty and sense of humility & professionalism. They were great to work with.

"Red" does the Sony/Columbia Showcase

This past Saturday, I went out to Cinespace in Hollywood to support friend, designer and recording artist Danni Rouge at the Sony/Columbia Music showcase. I'm so happy I had the opportunity to see her perform! "Chelsey" is also the creative force behind the insanely innovative accessories collection, Bullets & Bows. Since I met her on the fashion circuit, I had no idea she was also a talented singer and hadn't heard any of her music.

Armed with her fiery red hair, Coco & Breezy shades and BLOW Collection shirt Danni began her set belting Lauryn Hill's "Ready or Not" a cappella . She immediately grabbed the attention of the Sony/Columbia A&R's and audience members who were falling asleep from all the horrid performances before hers. She continued with her own music with the crowd rockin' right along with her. Everyone at Cinespace fell in love with Danni's powerful voice, thoughtful lyrics, dope beats and stage presence. Her press kits were snatched up by record execs before she could even get off stage and guests asked for pictures as she made her way to interview with Drop Your Talent TV.

My Sartorial Roots :: Mr. Rogers

Fred Rogers is probably best known as the host of the television show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, in production from 1968 to 2001. I grew up with Fred in my morning line-up right along side Sesame Street and David the Gnome. But little did I know while singing along with "Won't You Be My Neighbor" and learning about mathematics, tolerance and fictitious worlds in train tunnels, he was also teaching me about personal style.

In retrospect, one of my favorite parts of the show was at the very beginning when he changed from what appeared to be his work clothes comprised of a nice blazer and dress shoes into a colorful cable knit cardigan and canvas sneakers. Mr. Rogers dispelled all notions that style is a priority over comfort. He epitomized the term gentlemen; always classy with his button-collar shirt, patterned tie and perfectly pressed slacks.

Today, I find myself constantly borrowing elements from the man I admired and loved so much as a child. Everything he wore, even 40+ years ago, are still staples in my closet.

Style it You!

One of the greatest exercises of creativity is taking an article of clothing that upon first glance may not be you, but instead taking it as a challenge and styling it to make it completely yours. That's exactly what BLOW Clothing, by Los Angeles based designer Darryl Threat, does for me. Described by the creator himself as "urban couture," BLOW combines colorful American basics with a unique street edge in manner that I've never seen before.

I'd like to think my style is more classic and prep than anything. Most of the clothes I own are timeless basics that can be combined with just about anything. BLOW is the only "urban" line I've allowed access into my closet because its so thoughtfully designed and so well executed in its intention.

The latest piece from BLOW (an exclusive that hasn't yet been released online) is from the Black Diamond Collection - the "Please Don't Provoke the Goons" hoodie & sweatshirt. I LOVE it! Such an ingenious kitschy term! It reminds us that no matter how stylish you are, everyone has a little bit of a "goon" inside - and that can be interpreted in more ways than one. I'm a cerebral beast and when provoked my intellect, creativity and aggression are released!

"All Black Everything" Event

Last night I attended friend and recording artist/producer Malcolm Harvest's "All Black Everything" event. I had an awesome time! What an intensely refreshing experience! It's very rare that I come across an event where people appreciate looking good, being professional and having a great time. Everyone looked amazing in their mostly all black attire. There were live performances by local artists and even a short set by Malcolm himself!

Amongst the Angeleno elite, the party was also attended by Chris Brown, producer Polo da Don (who refused to take a photo with me), and actor Tristan Wilds. It was crazy to be up in VIP standing right next to these guys...and the groupies who were throwing themselves at them. Haha!

I also had an opportunity to do some networking and met my newest partner-in-crime, Earl Grae. Definitely a pleasure talking to him about our outlooks on men's fashion and what we're both trying to do. We have big things in store!

Shout out to my TN fam and other friends Kianna, Keisa, Symphony, Tiffany, Asia, Bryan, Kitti and Trend! Many Kudos to Harvest! Awesome, awesome party! I look forward to many more!

The Infamous Denim Shirt

GQ Magazine recently had a great article titled "10 for '10" which includes all the essential basics every man needs for Spring. The article had a feature called "The Multi-Talented Denim Shirt."

It can be one of the most versatile pieces in your wardrobe. Dress up your denim by pairing it with a suit, buttoning it up under a cardigan, or knotting up a knit tie with a tie bar. It’s like getting four shirts in one.

I think of the denim shirt as the grown man's white t-shirt. It truly can be paired with virtually anything! I purchased the one you see above for $4 at my local thrift. They have one just about every time I go. I simply styled it with a camping vest, bandanna and the signature denim heart. Great look! Minimal cost. You know how I do!

Pick one up for yourself and get a creative with it. They're definitely in season, so even if you're not into thrifting, you should be able to find one at most retailers.

I have a random retail rant and I've been meaning to post this for a minute. Below is what I had in mind (Zara Fall 09, Look #15) for my birthday that just passed. I found it on my daily routine fashion blogagge one day and decided I was going to make every effort to be less than tradition for this major milestone. I immediately started on the hunt for this killer jacket at every Zara in Southern California...no luck. I then visited every major retailer and men's boutique I could think of to find something comparable...no luck. Finally, the search ended with all the swapmeets, flea markets and thrift stores...no luck. I wasn't necessarily upset that I couldn't find the jacket. I was more pissed about the fact that out of all the articles of clothing I'd come across in the weeks leading up to my celebration, nothing was extraordinarily unique. Menswear is SO very boring right now! They've been selling the same stuff for the past 4 seasons - boring blazers, jackets, coats, sweaters, shirts...the list goes on.

But it's not the retailers I blame. It's the general population of men. Most are so cowardice and meek when it comes to the way they dress. Instead of selecting something a little more creative, they opt for what's safe. Gentlemen, you are killing retail! Be bold! Be daring! Shake things up! That's one of the cardinal rule of truly being a stylish man...

Thrifting with Sis

I took my sis, Kianna, to the "secret hideaway" on Valentine's Day. Who better to spend it with than both our first love, fashion! I get so much joy when I take people to my favorite thrift stores and see the excitement on their faces! Ki was overwhelmed with all of her finds. She couldn't help but smile from ear-to-ear at all the seconhand jewels she piled in our basket (as seen above). One of which will be revealed very soon! Yeah, it's that good... We spent the rest of the day working on our blogs, collections, and business ideas. It was such a productive day!

Inspired by the trip, I got to thinking about myself and my business. My evolution into a men's fashion journalist has afforded me a lot of awesome opportunities over these past 2 years; and they're only getting bigger and better.

Taking a note from industry giants like Bevy Smith, I'm currently developing my consulting business. Stay tuned for details on "the experience"...

Street Etiquette :: ‘Sewn From The Soul’

Not like I need Black History Month as excuse to share African Americans in fashion, but it seems so timely that I came across this! These brilliant images are from Street Etiquette’s ‘Sewn from the soul’ editorial. Created to commemorate Black History Month, the feature showcases the geniuses of SE and their extended family pay homage to several key Black figures including Huey P. Newton, Miles Davis and Nat King Cole amongst others.

I got so very excited when I flipped through the online "lookbook." This is truly an awesome concept coupled with excellent execution!
