From Mr. (socially) ACTIVE to Mr. (socially) ALPHA

On March 14, 2009, a longtime dream of mine was finally realized. I became a member of the illustrious ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC!!! For most people it was a complete and utter shock when I announced it on facebook. I got so many people who said, "I didn't even know you were interested." And to that I say you weren't supposed to know. Showing interest and being brought into a BGLO (black Greek lettered organization) is an extremely private thing. It is only between you and that organization, but I digress...

Becoming a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated has been one of the most meaningful and emotional moments of my life. I'd been interested since my Freshman year at Morehouse College. Previous to attending my Alma mater, I had never heard of Alpha. After becoming acclimated with the school and familiar with the fraternities on my campus, there were no doubts in my mind that I wanted to be a member of A Phi A. They were definitely men of distinction. Men that I found to share my same values and ideals. Men who exhibited a high level of class and commanded an even higher level of respect. Due to reasons that I won't get into on my blog, I didn't make it through the Alpha Rho Chapter at Morehouse. The funny thing is that I thought my passion for wanting to be apart of the organization would die down after I graduated. I was dead wrong. Regardless of the fact that I was no longer in college and not actively participating in college activities, I found myself wanting to be a member of A Phi A more so than I did when I was in college.

I'm a person who believes in fate and seeing my Spesh, LaJon, at the Morehouse/Spelman picnic last summer was fate. It is through him that I found my chapter, Beta Psi Lambda, where upon first meeting the members I knew this was the one for me.

I spent months "going through the process" (that's what we'll call it for legal reasons). There was a lot that went into becoming a member (again, I'm being elusive for a reason). After numerous, tiring months I achieved what I never thought possible. On Saturday, March 14, 2009, 8:10:07 I became the ICE COLD Ace of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc, Beta Psi Lambda Chapter, Spring 2009 line, Utashi.

This explains a great deal of my absense from my beloved blog, as well as on the social scene for the past few months. I've been a Neo for about a week and a half now and there's nothing like it! I'm among the ranks of the most gifted, intelligent, distinguished Black men on God's green earth.

Special thanks to my chapter President Dr. C. P. Loeb, my Dean Jason, my Spesh LaJon, my LBs (Jerry, Marques, Brandon & Donald), the members of Beta Psi Lambda, the members of Alpha Rho, John Gist and all my Bruhs for so warmly welcoming me into the Brotherhood. I look forward to a lifetime of priceless experiences with my Fraternity.

I AM ALPHA PHI ALPHA!!! 1-1-1-1-9 06!!!

Dollars In My Mouth :: Part II

I've been slacking a bit on my promise of keeping everyone updated on my progress in my design classes. This past week, lesson #3 began. We're making pajamas! Yay! LoL! I haven't had the time I need to go fabric shopping like I want. I really need to go downtown to Michael Levine's, but that'll have to wait until after this week (I'll have a lot more free time after this weekend). In the meantime, I've been just running up the street to JoAnn's to get the muslin and cotton that I needed. Clothing Construction I has been very interesting so far. First, I've learned that sewing is not even half as easy as it looks. Next, I've learned a great deal about fabric in general - how to cut it; how to measure it; what to look for it, etc, etc. It really makes you look at garments in a completely different light and makes you appreciate the time and effort put into everything you wear. The picture above is me tracing a pattern for my pajamas. I'm not in love with my fabric choice, but trust, it was the best they had. I'll post pictures when they're finished...

I didn't get a good picture of them, but these are my 2 newest buddies in the class, the 2 Ashleys. I freakin love them already! They're merchandising majors and they hate sewing, but we make class interesting for each other.

Also...

I forgot to post lesson #1. We had to make felt needle wallets by hand. My professor told us to select colors and elements that are reflective of our own personal style and aesthetic. I chose the beige & royal felt and brown thread because I love earth tones against vibrant primary colors. I added the button because it reminded me a lot of the buttons on my dad's blazers that he used to rock in the 80s. Classic touch. I got a 17.5 out of 18. She said my threading wasn't even... :-P I doubt I'll post pictures of lesson #2. It's pretty boring; just seems sewn onto off-white muslin.

The BEST Surprise!

So, Lovey calls me the other day and tells me that she has a surprise for me that should come in the mail Tuesday. I get all excited because her surprises never disappoint. She's one of the dopest artists I know and she's made me some of the most beautiful, thoughtful gifts I've ever received. I didn't know what it was, but I couldn't wait to see it. Then she calls me up Monday and tells me that her dad has my gift and asks if I had time to meet him. Of course I do! Tuesday night, after I get out of class I run over to the other side of town to her dad's. She tells me to wait for him, as he was "on his way home from a meeting." I pulled up and waited in front of the house while playing with my BlackBerry Storm. All of a sudden a dark car pulls up next to me and stops. I notice out of my peripheral and thought to myself, "Who the FUCK is this? I'm in a pretty good neighborhood, but then again, this is L.A." Just as I looked, the window in the car rolls down and it's none other than my partner-in-crime, MS. STONEY LOVE! I was in shock! She didn't tell me she was coming home for Spring Break. THAT was better than anything else she could have sent me! She'll be here for 2 weeks. Madness is about to ensue on the streets of L.A....

Daily Dose of Kanye & Amber

I think it's pretty safe to say that Kanye West & Amber Rose have taken the place of most stylish couple in Hollywood in my mind - formerly held by David & Victoria Beckham.

Ye's Jeremy Scott varsity cardi and black gold Jesus piece, along with Amber's shades made my day. So much so that they inspired me to start a new series on the blog.

Over the Weekend

Amidst all the random and craziness that was this weekend, I was still fortunate enough to have a drink (or 12) and have a good time with good people. You can call John, Ant and I the new school Kid N Play. We threw a good old fashioned house party at John's crib this past Saturday night. I had a blast! Everyone we invited came out and them some. John bought a club's worth of alcohol so the good times kept rollin all night.

Besides a hole in the wall and a near chick fight in the front yard, it made for ideal Saturday night in L.A.!

LMFAO!!!

So, I just got settled in and I start reading my dailies to get my morning started off right. I go to my boy Patrick's blog and spot this photo of Paul Rudd, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill and Jason Segal. I INSTANTLY fall on the floor, crying laughing! It's a parody of the 2006 cover of Vanity Fair featuring Tom Ford, Scarlett Johansson, and Keira Knightley. Thanks for the laugh Pat!

Hilarious!
